Weber Shandwick is currently seeking a Senior Associate to join our Earned Media team in Toronto. We’re a passionate and diverse team that protects and promotes some of Canada’s most iconic and beloved brands – and has fun while doing it!

 

We’re looking for a team player to help us tell compelling stories for our clients through innovative and integrated earned, owned and paid media strategies. You love the thrill of the pitch, building relationships with media and influencers, and immersing themselves in social media, culture and technology trends to drive impact for brands.

 

With 2-3 years of experience, you’ll help us create campaigns that drive earned media coverage and activate influencer and social programs that generate meaningful and measurable results.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Help develop and execute innovative and award-winning integrated PR campaigns for major Canadian and global brands
  • Work with the Earned Media team and client leads to support the development and execution of social media and influencer strategies and proposals
  • Identify and build relationships with media, influencers and content creators to bring our clients’ stories to life through trusted and relatable voices
  • Identify new outlets and platforms, and creative ways to propel earned-first storytelling for our clients
  • Monitor media outlets, understand industry issues that directly and indirectly affect our clients, and analyze and distill meaningful insights from media coverage and social conversations
  • Monitor issues and help develop strategic messaging for clients’ issues and reputational risks
  • Develop and track meaningful KPIs to measure success of campaigns and return on investment for our clients
  • Participation in office-wide initiatives, seminars and meetings to further professional learning and development

 

Key Qualifications:

  • Approximately 2-3 years of experience, ideally in an agency, communications or marketing environment
  • Digitally savvy, with a good understanding of the overall media and social media landscape
  • Proven ability to garner coverage and conversation on behalf of brands, organizations, companies or other institutions
  • Familiarity with media and/or influencer databases, journalist-led tools and resources
  • A working style that is self-motivated, well-organized and resilient to ever-changing timelines, requests and deliverables
  • Strong written, verbal communication, presentation, collaboration and problem-solving skills
  • A degree in communications or a related discipline

Salary range: $55,000 – $63,000

  • Craft narratives to place our clients at the forefront of culture
  • Solve problems, handle crises, and make quick decisions with incomplete information
  • Ideate and shape brand campaigns that tap into culture,  lifestyle and influencer trends
  • Draw on our total agency resources (locally, regionally, globally) and bring our clients the best of our network for every project
  • Establish a high standard for quality and deliver above expectations, continuing to fulfill the trusted partner role we have built with our clients
  • Craft presentations for senior client stakeholders with a persuasive and engaging presentation style

The right person for this role has:

  • 12+ years of experience in media relations inclusive of agency experience working on integrated communications campaigns
  • Deep knowledge of the consumer products space, with experience in – and passion for – telling stories on behalf of lifestyle brands
  • Strong selling and negotiating skills, with the ability to bring new/proactive ideas to new and existing clients
  • Proven track record of proactively identifying and delivering strategic storytelling opportunities that unlock account growth beyond the current or ‘expected’ remit
  • Strong familiarity and expertise related to social, digital and influencer channels that can further fuel earned-driven communications
  • Exceptional client service track record with ability to counsel and interact effectively with senior management at client organizations
  • Experience managing a large earned media team and the keen organizational skills needed to juggle multiple client needs at once
  • Ability to efficiently manage cross-office teams that span multiple cities and countries with integrated account teams preferred
  • Ability to be both strategic and hands-on, to flex with clients’ needs
  • Success leading teams and developing talent
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, strong leadership qualities, and a collaborative attitude
  • A willingness to challenge how things have always been done, in a desire to continuously improve
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Weber Shandwick is seeking a Senior Associate, Earned Media (Senior Account Executive equivalent) for its growing health earned media team and healthcare practice.

 

As a Senior Associate, you will be supporting earned media strategy and execution for campaign and product launches, news engine programs, disease awareness initiatives and more for our healthcare accounts. The ideal candidate has experience in or a passion for health-related work and a foundation of media relations skills. Job description:

  • Serves as a key integrated team member in support of strategic earned media campaigns, including developing media relations action plans, goals and objectives, media targets, story angles and outreach approaches, in collaboration with and support from senior media relations team members
  • Generates story ideas and drafts media materials (e.g., media lists, written content, pitches and pitching reports), conducts outreach, and manages reporter/influencer relationships and media opportunities to land coverage
  • Researches media topics, trends, important issues, and reporters in support of new assignments and projects, including new business opportunities
  • Attends client events and manages on-site media and influencers at local and national events
  • Maintains a keen interest in current news and industry trends; proactively shares insights with teams and clients to inform plans, strategies and activations
  • Anticipates and proactively offers solutions to senior team leadership for executional issues specific to assigned programs
  • Assists with client communication and manages detailed tasks with the account and earned media teams
  • Develops and manages project timelines and weekly action plans to ensure all deadlines on client programs are met
  • Identifies the development needs of junior staff and provides opportunities which allow staff members to reach their full potential

 

Requirements:

  • 2 or more years’ experience in public relations at an agency or corporate in-house (healthcare experience preferred)
  • Experience and interest in working with healthcare clients across industries
  • Excellent communication/presentation skills; verbal and written
  • Strong attention to detail and project management skills
  • Ability to multi-task effectively and work within tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

POSITION PROFILE

Our Toronto office is looking for a Senior Manager, Earned Media, who is a seasoned public and media relations consultant responsible for providing strategic client counsel around media and influencer engagement, helping plan media events, leading announcement activations, securing media stories and guiding and mentoring up-and-coming talent. The ideal candidate will have experience that encompasses media relations (earned and paid), influencer engagement, event planning and program execution. 

With 5-7 years of experience, you’ll help us create campaigns that drive impactful earned media coverage and activate influencer and social programs that generate meaningful and measurable results.  

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 
 

  • Develop a strong understanding of the client’s business and target audience, and work with strategists and creative team members to deliver innovative and integrated programs that earn attention 
  • Generate story ideas and topic angles, draft media materials, and pitch media to land earned coverage 
  • Monitor media outlets, understand industry issues that directly and indirectly affect the client, and analyze and distill meaningful insights from media coverage 
  • Support executive visibility efforts for clients including identifying, pitching and securing interviews and speaking engagements for C-suite 
  • Develop strategic messaging for clients and support creation of media plans and proposals that take an integrated approach to driving awareness with target audiences 
  • Provide thoughtful recommendations for content creation and distribution across multiple channels to support paid, owned and earned channels 
  • Oversee client activations and activation teams  
  • Counsel, coach and develop junior staff  
  • Lead logistics planning for media and other influencer events 
  • Support the development of KPIs to maximize media relations impact  
  • Develop program staffing plans and budgets and work directly with clients and finance team to address related deliverables and questions 
  • Highlight results, measuring success and promoting wins and key learnings to client 

 

REQUIREMENTS 
 

  • Public relations experience of approximately 5-7 years, agency or in-house 
  • Experience in retail, technology and/or small business sectors an asset 
  • Expertise in media relations and event planning, including:  
  • Strong existing media and influencer relationships 
  • Working knowledge of and comfort executing new media forms 
  • Ability to develop new media and influencer relations and turn those relationships into coverage 
  • Drafting media materials, including pitches and press releases 
  • Optimizing programs in real-time to maximize success based on preliminary results 
  • Amplification of strategies, including paid, owned and earned 
  • Ability to plan, organize, monitor and control projects and programs, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and creative resources  
  • Ability to counsel clients on media relations activities and present plans in a convincing manner 
  • Ability to work effectively with integrated agency teams and diverse range of internal stakeholders  
  • Strong team leadership abilities  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English 
  • Strong negotiation, presentation, collaboration and problem-solving skills 

 

Salary range: CAD 79,000.00 – CAD 95,000.00
