Crisis Issue and Capital Market Communications 

Primary Location-United States-New York, New York 

The Weber Shandwick New York office is seeking an Account Director to join its Global Crisis and Issues Practice.  

What we are seeking: 

 We are looking for a change agent to help us grow our Global Crisis and Issues Practice and support a wide array of high-profile clients with capital markets, crisis preparedness and live crisis/issues counsel and support. You should have extensive capital markets, crisis communications and issues management experience, preferably across multiple industries and across the spectrum of public and private companies. 

You will play an important role on our team, leading a broad range of projects, developing new business opportunities, and helping to mentor and grow the skill sets of emerging talent in our practice. You should be digital analytics-savvy, have strong writing skills and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. Previous agency experience is a must. An additional plus: experience working in public affairs or media role.

We are on the front lines of some of the biggest, most complex issues – and the nature of our work requires an ability and eagerness to juggle multiple responsibilities and work on multi-office client teams. You will have the opportunity to play a leading role in driving both ongoing client engagements and discrete projects.   

What you will be doing: 

  • Support a range of financial communications, issues and crisis communications situations for companies and organizations, including those related to  earnings, financial transactions (IPOs, M&As), special situations, (shareholder activism, workplace culture, litigation, regulatory compliance, DEI, brand safety, misinformation, product safety issues and recalls, cybersecurity attacks, investigative reporting, and more.  
  • Serve as the day-to-day client contact – providing account support and counsel, flagging, triaging, and directly managing client issues as they arise.  
  • Train and motivate emerging talent and help create opportunities for their growth.  
  • Execute frequent media outreach around financial events, including backgrounding and pitching reporters, correcting inaccuracies, and facilitating client media interviews, as appropriate. As well as proactive media outreach and reactive media relations strategies in connection with issues and crisis management strategies as needed.  
  • Develop and draft crisis plans, media strategies, reactive media statements, talking points, FAQs, memos, crisis simulations and other deliverables as needed.   
  • Provide regular counsel to clients and colleagues.  
  • Keep client programs on schedule and ensure all deadlines are met within budget parameters.  
  • Participate in new business development for the team and collaborate among practice areas at the agency in support of broader new business pitches that include a crisis and issues component.  

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and/or 5+ years of relevant experience in an agency/strategic consulting firm, political campaign, or similar setting.  
  • Experience directly counseling clients/senior ranking executives through a broad range of crises, issues and special situations.  
  • Experience with corporate reputation, brand management and protection through integrated communications programs.  
  • Solid understanding of capital markets fundamentals, what’s happening in the markets and issues affecting the financial and reputational well-being of companies 
  • Familiarity with the latest digital trends in social media strategy, tools, and analytics and ability to turn insights into actionable recommendations.  
  • Thrives under pressure and can handle multiple projects in a demanding, deadline-oriented environment.  
  • Exercises exceptional judgment when working with clients, team members, and vendors.  
  • Communicates clearly, analytically, and persuasively both orally and in writing.  
  • Pays close attention to detail and quality of work product.  
  • Adept at solving problems and resolving conflicts.  
  • Capable of mobilizing and motivating teams, anticipating needs, and instilling confidence.  
  • Experience delivering media and crisis training is a plus.

NYC Salary range: $115,000 – $135,000

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Senior Manager, Corporate Issues/Crisis to join our Corporate Affairs practice in the West (San Francisco, Seattle or Los Angeles). What You Will Be Doing 

  • Effectively lead project teams in the day-to-day function of protecting clients’ organizational and brand reputations. 
  • Develop real-time assessments and points of view on when and how to respond to an emerging issue or crisis 
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and draft protocols and plans to help clients be better prepared to manage future crises 
  • Provide senior clients and colleagues with strategic and tactical recommendations 
  • Monitoring and analyzing traditional and social media for potential threats or developments relevant to clients and their industries 
  • Support the development and execution of crisis trainings and drills 
  • Assist in the development of long-term reputation management or recovery plans and program recommendations 
  • Develop and manage timelines and weekly actions plans to ensure all deadlines on client programs are met 
  • Being available during evenings and weekends, depending on client needs 
  • Anticipate and proactively offer solutions to clients and senior team leadership for reputational issues 
  • Motivate the team by bringing a positive, solutions-focused attitude to everything you do and providing mentorship and guidance for junior staff 
  • Help build positive, long-lasting client relationships 
  • Where necessary, support new business development and growth for issues/crisis engagements 

Basic Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • 6-7 years public relations or communications experience, particularly in issues and crisis communications management; agency experience is preferred 
  • Proven creative and strategic thinking experience 
  • Track record in client service to senior level clients 
  • Experience and knowledge of public relations and corporate communications best practices, including media relations, executive communications, thought leadership, B2B communications, social and traditional media monitoring and reporting, and the changing media landscape

We are looking for a seasoned change agent to help us grow our Global Crisis and Issues Practice, drive a broad range of issues-oriented and proactive reputation campaigns, and help clients prepare for and manage complex issues and live crises.

You should be able to lead day-to-day client and team activity, cultivate strong relationships with clients, help craft and lead execution of new programs, plans and strategies, and work with a broad set of media (business and trade; traditional print, online and broadcast). You can drive forward plans and programs within set parameters and achieve outstanding results for clients. Finally, you should be curious, resourceful, and entrepreneurial. Previous agency experience and understanding of advanced data analytics platforms and resources is a must.

You will have worked with clients across multiple industries and understand how to work with data and analytics experts to generate insights and inform counsel.
