Associate Creative Director, Design Lead
Weber Shandwick — Detroit, Michigan
At Weber Shandwick, our mission is to “solve.” More than ever, organizations turn to Weber Shandwick to deliver deeper impact. As client business models — and communications methods — adapt to new realities, we’re uniquely suited to bring diverse talents, global insights and pioneering instincts to deliver industry-defining work. We’re going beyond traditional lines to integrate social, digital, advertising, content, PR, corporate reputation and public affairs. We also see diversity and inclusion as more than a priority, but as a competitive advantage to bring diverse ideas and points of view to the table. So, we need different kinds of people with unique special talents to help us deliver on that promise.
Weber Shandwick is a global company with offices in more than 80 countries, so we offer the advantages of a big firm – from leading-edge research, sophisticated technology and the resources to invest in growth. But, at our heart, we still have the spirit of the small company we used to be – entrepreneurial, ambitious, warm and fun; with a splash of Detroit grit and determination.
About the Role
Weber Shandwick is looking for an Associate Creative (Design) Director to lead design efforts for our growing creative team across our automotive accounts. This role will require you to have an entrepreneurial mindset to fully define and implement the role of this position and the design team. Although our office is based in Detroit, we’re looking for the right candidate, so we’re open to remote. Note: Eastern Time working hours are required.
The candidate will need to be:
- Responsible for elevating both the level of craft and the quality of our design solutions across our clients and functions.
- A world-class designer and visual storyteller with impeccable craft, comfortably and consistently superb in execution across a range of visual styles and mediums.
- An expert at all things digital, particularly social media and video production.
- Able to define strategic and creative points of view on Brand Character, Brand Image, and Design Themes.
- Not just a stellar designer but enjoy nurturing those with less experience, helping to mentor other designers within the team to foster their talents, create world class creative solutions and achieve their career goals.
- A collaborator. You will collaborate closely with various internal and external teams to create new brands, define style guidelines, prep artwork for production and craft beautiful presentations.
- Very (very) hands-on, always perfecting the tiniest details. You don’t just lead by example. You’re comfortable rolling up your sleeves and taking on any task.
Responsibilities
- Execute and manage original, persuasive, conceptual and visually compelling design work in line with agency and brand standards, including (but not limited to): iconography, brand guidelines, typography, illustration, digital materials, video materials, organic and paid social media assets, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
- Establish a design practice within our creative team, providing oversight to our Designers, with the goal of developing a culture of collaboration, experimentation and knowledge sharing
- Fluently speak about design concepts with clients, as well as internal teams of creatives, producers and editors, to enable effective collaboration, feedback and direction
- Maintain and promote an internal awareness of industry design trends and standards, particularly on social media
- Cultivate a sense of ownership that elevates the standards and quality of all work achieved by the designers
- Be a natural teacher – encourage designers to approach problem solving differently, always with the goal of learning and growing
- From concept to execution, bring an enthusiasm for solving design and marketing challenges throughout the life of a project, and amid stakeholder revisions
- Have mastery of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Powerpoint, as well as emerging interactive design trends. Knowledge of AfterEffects and Sketch is a plus
- Build ongoing relationships with partner agency design teams, and other design teams within the Weber Shandwick network
- Display a cohesive understanding of digital and interactive design principals; we do not produce many websites or mobile apps, but need someone who can speak to and direct those UX/UI needs when necessary
Qualifications
- Has a proven track record in digital, video and campaign design
- Expert-level knowledge of social media and design best practices
- Automotive experience is preferred, but not required
- At least 5 years of experience in the creative, advertising, marketing or PR industries; or leading a design team
- A solid understanding of the communications industry at large; an ability and a desire to adapt to the changing landscape of technology
- Proven leadership skills managing multiple projects/tasks/teams of varying complexities, meeting deadlines, and working well under pressure
- Resilience, a cheerful and positive attitude, and respect for others
- Exceptional internal and external communication skills, someone who can present and defend their work clearly and confidently
- An interest in staying on top of emerging platforms, mobile design and social trends

CREATIVE DIRECTOR, COPY
If you’re reading this, you’re probably scrolling on your phone. Perfect. Let’s talk.
The Weber Shandwick Collective (TWSC) is looking for a Creative Director-COPY who lives and breathes the internet. If you have a running theory about the next big TikTok trend, can spot the next biggest creator or meme format before it’s viral, and obsess over how to break through in the new media landscape, you might just have found your calling.
This is a role for someone interested in working on some of the biggest brands in the world and crafting groundbreaking campaigns that spark joy, ignite shares, and earn a permanent spot in people’s lives. We want the kind of ideas that don’t just ride a wave, but that create one.
Let’s be clear: this is not the job where you’re cranking out uninspired visuals and the same old rinse-and-repeat ideas. This is the job, and the agency, where ideas meet cultural currency. Where you’ll create the campaign that everyone shares before lunch. Where ideas become award-winning work that’s discussed around the country.
So, let’s talk specifics.
What You’ll Do
- Create magic: You’ll drive ideation of attention-grabbing ideas. You’ll work alongside various disciplines from strategy to account to media relations and analytics (to name a few) to ensure your ideas feed algorithms and transcend platforms.
- Own the voice, balancing art and strategy: Be a guardian of the tone of voice of the brand and for each campaign you work on. Stay playful, but always purposeful. Your visuals and ideas won’t just entertain, they’ll deliver results.
- Be a builder: You’ll mentor and manage folks on our creative team—helping shape our next generation of creative talent imbuing them with a keen eye for storytelling and a focus on craft.
- Be the pulse of culture: Research platforms, subcultures, emerging media, and niche communities to unearth untapped opportunities. You need to know before anyone else what Gens Alpha and Z are doing on social channels, why brands are jumping all over a meme, what conversations are capturing the attention of journalists (and why) and who is poised to become the next big thing in the cultural conversation. These inputs will shape the ideas you develop and bring to teams and clients.
What You’ll Bring
- Obsessive curiosity: About trends, people, platforms, memes, and the mechanics of why certain things just work.
- A social media sixth sense: You know which platforms matter most, what kind of content works where, and how to surprise people in their scroll.
- Pop culture proficiency: From mainstream moments to niche internet corners, you stay plugged into what everyone’s talking about, and what they’re about to.
- Experience: 10 years copywriting experience, especially if you’ve worked on earned campaigns, digital campaigns and social-first campaigns or for culturally relevant brands. You’ll of course need to work quickly and accurately within all aspects of presentation software (PowerPoint). Bonus points for filmmaking, videography, editorial, animation, HTML.
- A sense of humor: If you can’t laugh at yourself (or at least at the internet), we’re not the place for you.
Why You’ll Love It Here (Other than the Snacks)
- You’ll work with some of the best creatives in the business, a team fueled by bold ideas, cultural insights, and enough caffeine to power a small city.
- You’ll have the freedom to experiment, fail forward, and redefine what “earned-first creativity” means.
- You’ll create work that matters to brands, to audiences, and to culture at large.
Final Thought (Because We’re Big on Storytelling)
This job isn’t just about understanding what makes good images. It’s about being the creative who reshapes how brands communicate in this endlessly scrolling, algorithm-ruled world. It’s about showing up every day with fresh ideas and a love for the craft. And maybe, just maybe, it’s about finally justifying all the hours you spend on TikTok.
If this sounds like you, let’s create something worth bookmarking.
Send us your portfolio, résumé, and a list of the accounts and trends you’re loving right now. Because if we’re going to shape culture, we want to know you’re already in it.
Cue the end slate. Let’s make some magic.
